Allen Brewer (Pierce Brosnan) and his wife Grace Brewer (Susan Sarandon) face the grief that emerges when their teenage son Bennett (Aaron Johnson) dies in an automobile accident. Surviving is his girlfriend Rose (Carey Mulligan) who earns the resentment of the family for emerging from the car crash with only minor injuries. Another son named Ryan (Johnny Simmons) reacts by not reacting to the extremes of his parents. When Rose reveals she is pregnant with the child of the deceased Bennett, the family’s mourning is complicated by their desire and need to give Rose support. Yet the family was dysfunctional before the death and only becomes moreso after the death of the elder son.
