While sleeping with one of her husband’s business associates, a wife sees a rape committed in the neighboring apartment as she looks out the bedroom window while her lover is in the bathroom. She dares not report anything lest her husband Collin Wentworth (Paul Shenar) learn of her unfaithfulness. To protect Sylvia Wentworth (Isabelle Huppert), young architect Terry Lambert (Steve Guttenberg) reports to police that he witnessed the crime and gives a description of the culprit as Sylvia described him. Police detectives Quirke (Carl Lumbly) and Jessup (Frederick Coffin) ask Terry and the victim Denise (Elizabeth McGovern) to identify suspects in a line-up, but Terry cannot. Police then begin to suspect he is the rapist. Terry, the wrong man who was not at the rear window, must try to prove his innocence beyond a shadow of a doubt.
